Information for Parents - 2022~2023

Parents are asked to support their children in each class in school.

  • Ask your son/daughter about school.
  • Encourage high standards and good behaviour.
  • Look at any work sent home.
  • Praise good work.
  • Supervise, check homework activities.
  • Talk to your child about everyday things e.g. time, distance, weight and money.
  • Encourage activities outside school, if possible.
  • Spellings should be taught using the method:
  • LOOK, SAY, COVER, WRITE AND CHECK.
  • If any area of homework is proving too difficult, please let the class teacher know.
  • Label uniforms and personal items clearly with your child’s name.

  • Primary 1
  • From November you child will be given a reading book home. This is a wonderful opportunity for parent and child to work together and should be a positive and enjoyable experience.  Children are introduced to Storyworld and Oxford Reading Tree reading scheme which have been chosen to stimulate an interest in stories, pictures and print and to develop reading skills.
  • Children are introduced to the sounds of the alphabet. We use Jolly Phonics to teach the letter names, sounds and correct letter formations in an enjoyable and multi-sensory way.
  • In Numeracy we work on a variety of activities to develop number concepts to help children to become confident in recognising the number 0-10, their sequence, position and value. Children also explore the concepts of shape, measure, pattern, sorting and money.
  • The aim is always to promote the child's self-esteem and to promote learning as a worth while activity.
  • In P1 we encourage independence as much as possible.
  • In P1 we encourage indenpdence as much as possible. Please practise putting on coats and jumpers as well as openign lunch containers.
  • P1 have exercise or outdoor play regularly.  We will also have 'Fit Friday', wear sports clothes (dark bottoms, blue top and trainers) to school.
  • PE will be on a Wednesday and Thursday

  • Primary 2
  • Reading will continue to develop the core skills attained in P1. Your child will have reading on Monday – Thursday in school and these books will be sent home the following week.
  • P2 - Spellings and tables will start in November with 3 simple words and 4 tables per night. Details will be sent home in November as to how to help your child to learn them.
  • P2 will receive key words home in Term 1.
  • We will have 'Fit Friday', wear sports clothes (dark bottoms, blue top and trainers) to school.
  • PE will be on a Monday and Wednesday.
  • Encourage independence as much as possible.

  • Primary 3
  • Reading will continue to develop the core still attained in P2. Your child will have reading Monday-Thursday in school and books will be sent home the following week.
  • Primary 3 will follow a similar pattern to P2. Children should now be gaining confidence in reading and should be able to read a greater variety of material with more independence.
  • Children need to develop independence and become increasingly responsible for bringing correct books and equipment to and from school.
  • Spellings and tables are given on three nights with Thursday night being for revision.
  • Children will be set a creative and practical homework.
  • We will have 'Fit Friday', wear sports clothes (dark bottoms, blue top, and trainers) to school.

  • Primary 4
  • Primary 4 work is a continuation and extension of the work done in the previous year
  • Spellings and tables are given on three nights with Thursday night being for revision.
  • Pupils are encouraged to take increasing responsibility for themselves, their behaviour, their belongings and their learning.
  • Children will be set a creative and practical homework.
  • We will have 'Fit Friday', wear sports clothes (dark bottoms, blue top and trainers) to school.
  • PE for Mrs McClean's P3 wil be on a Tuesday and Thursday and for Mrs Patrick's P3 a Monday and Wednesday.

  • Primary 5
  • By P5 children are expected to be more responsible for themselves; coming to school with the correct books and equipment for each day.
  • Throughout P5 the focus is on English and Maths, however the other subjects are also very important.
  • Spellings and tables are given on three nights with Thursday night being for revision.
  • Reading is set for the week, or fortnight, depending on the book.
  • Written homework is given on two nights each week, 1 English, 1 Maths and occasionally World Around Us. All homework should be checked.
  • Children may be set a creative, investigative or practical homework.
  • We will have 'Fit Friday', wear your school PE kit or other sporting clothes in school colours (eg navy jogger bottoms, school t-shirt, school jumper and trainers) to school. 
  • PE wil be on a Tuesday and Thursday.
  • Primary 6
  • By P6 children are expected to be more responsible for themselves; coming to school with the correct books and equipment for each day.
  • Throughout P6 the focus is on English and Maths, however the other subjects are also very important.
  • Spellings and tables are give on three nights with Thursday night being for revision.
  • Reading is set on a Monday for the week, or fortnight, depending on the book.

  • Written homework is given on four nights each week – 1 English, 1 Maths or occasionally The World Around Us, while spellings and tables are given on three nights with Thursday night being for revision. All homework should be checked.
  • Reading is set on a Monday for the week, or fortnight, depending on the book.
  • Written homework is given on two nights each week - 1 English, 1 Maths or ocassionally The World Around Us, spellings and tables are given on three nights with Thursday night being for revision. All homework should be checked.
  • Children may be set an investigative or practical homework related to topic work.
  • There may also be weekend homework.
  • We will have 'Fit Friday', wear your school PE kit or other sporting clothes in school colours (eg navy jogger bottoms, school t-shirt, school jumper and trainers) to school.
  • PE will be on a Wednesday and Thursday.

  • Helpful Homework Habits
  • Work out the best time for you to do your homework.
  • Gather all your books and stationery before you start.
  • Have a drink, preferably water. Research suggests that this may help you perform better.
  • Find a quiet comfortable environment, away from anything that may distract you.
  • Read and follow any instructions carefully.
  • Remember to give your work your best effort, as if you were in the classroom.
  • Check through your work carefully.
  • Make sure your completed homework is in your school bag for the next day.
